In this class, students will get an introduction (or expansion!) of natural dye skills. We will work with a variety of dye materials to create a lovely, 8”x54” silk scarf. We will explore the techniques of eco-printing and bundle dyeing to add natural color to our scarves. We will also talk through the use of iron and tannins to create beautiful effects. Students are encouraged to bring in their own flowers and leaves to play with, but plenty of supplies will be provided so feel free to show up empty handed!
Taught by Jenny Chang of Canvas and Joy. Jenny is an artist living in San Luis Obispo who specializes in natural dye work and painting quirky animals. Growing up in Kansas City, Jenny was on the path of biological research. Eventually, her love of art took over and she pursued her lifelong dream of becoming an artist. Jenny spent many years as a painter focusing on acrylics and watercolors. In 2022, Jenny discovered the joy of natural dye work and has been studying this art form almost exclusively since. In addition to her own work, Jenny spends time teaching and loves to help others excel in their art.
